MONXTON
Takes its present name from the family of Walter 'le Munek'='the monk' who held the manor in the 13th century. Like SARSON, therefore, a late name including Middle English 'tun'='farm'. It was earlier called 1269 'Anne de Bek'. It was one of the manors of the very large royal domains at and west of Andover (see ABBOT'S ANN), and was by the early 13th century granted to the abbey of Bec-Hellouin in Normandy, which also held the manor of 'Tooting Bec' (Surrey).
